Dylan is a North Elementary student who stood out this month among nominations for our Student of the Month spotlight. Staff members shared high praise for his ability to overcome challenges, work hard, and continue to grow.
Here’s what teachers had to say about him:
“I had the pleasure of meeting Dylan when he was three years old after moving to Warsaw. A child who was not eating solid food, couldn’t hold his head up, and was severely delayed quickly became a large part of my life! Dylan participated in the ECSE program at Warsaw South, where we made leaps and bounds academically, functionally, and socially. He is now a 2nd grader in my classroom participating in the Essential Skills program. Dylan is known for his bubbly personality, lovingness, and determination. In the school setting, Dylan learned to ride a bike at the end of last school year and is an incredible driver. Our staff supports Dylan, and understands that not all success looks like getting good grades, stating multiplication facts, and always doing what is expected. When you work in special education, you learn very quickly that progress doesn’t always look the way it does on a report card or a standardized assessment. Our students deserve high expectations. They deserve opportunities to learn and grow. And they also deserve educators who recognize that progress can look different for every child. When we celebrate that progress, we aren’t lowering the bar. We are recognizing the student who is standing in front of us today while continuing to help them become who they can be tomorrow. That is what special education is about, and North Elementary Staff are all here to celebrate, and encourage Dylan through every milestone of his life!” -Miss Kya

“I remember Dylan’s first day at South School when I worked in the cafeteria. Who would have thought he would make the amazing progress that he’s achieved?!? He and the amazing teachers, staff and family have worked so hard and he has come so far. Seeing what he has accomplished is what being in education and in this school district is all about. “I had the privilege of meeting Dylan when he was just 3 years old. At that time, Dylan was unable to walk independently or communicate any wants or needs. Since then, I have had the opportunity to watch him grow and overcome many challenges through hard work, perseverance and determination. Dylan continues to impress the staff members who have had the opportunity to work with him. His growth is a wonderful example of what can happen when a student's determination is combined with strong support from family and school staff. Dylan demonstrates incredible grit and a willingness to keep working, even when things are difficult.
